This book improved my GRE score markedly February 10, 2007 S. Callaway (USA) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
I took the GRE a few weeks ago, and I had 2 1/2 weeks to prepare for it, having never seen or heard of the GRE before that time. I panicked and ordered four books. Kaplan's verbal workbook was a great purchase and it improved my verbal score - I got a 610 and I am not even born and raised in the USA.
I used Kaplan in conjunction with Barron's Passkey to the GRE Test and The Ultimate Verbal and Vocabulary Builder. Together, the three of them and 6 stacks of flashcards were the reason I did well on the test. The best part of the Kaplan book is the exercises and strategies given to help you through the challenging verbal section. I learned to make an educated guess even if I didn't know what any of the words meant and I got quite a few of them right. It is not so much about roots, prefixes and suffixes, but more about using the word in context with the other words and ruling out possibilities that are impossible. I strongly recommend making this book part of your GRE study regimen. I did one of each group of exercies per day. For reference, I studied on average 12 hours a day for two straight weeks. This book is worth your money and MUCH better than anything published by ETS which proved useless to me.
Good Book! December 1, 2005 Irene Music 24 out of 27 found this review helpful
I took my GRE in October and got 96% for Verbal. I think I owe it to this book (AND to Barron's Pass Key to the GRE). This book has a very helpful vocab list -- I especially like how they break down into which sets of words are most common, then next most common etc... I also found their analogies section and sentence completion section very helpful -- the 4 types of bridges idea for an analogy was next to revolutionary for me. Also learning that the answer choices for an analogy have to match the same order as the words in the analogy. I lived 27 years and NEVER knew that, I don't know how many times I've gotten questions wrong from having the correct relationship there but the answer words in the wrong order.
The other sections I didn't find too helpful, the reading comp. And their section on building your vocab starts with something like "read your whole life" haha, that was meaningless.
GRE Exam Verbal Workbook September 18, 2000 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
I needed some extra help boosting my score on the verbal section, and this book did the trick! It was very thorough, and the strategies they give really worked. I also liked that there were lots of practice questions, and the detailed explanations for every answer helped me understand the ones I got wrong. Also, there's a great "mini-dictionary" with tons of words that are often found on the test.
Fantastic! August 13, 2001 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I always have trouble with the verbal sections of standardized tests, so I knew I'd need extra help studying for the GRE. This book gave me everything I needed to do well! There's a whole section devoted to analogies, which always trip me up, as well as Sentence Completions and Reading Comprehension. The part that was most useful for me, though, was the great Vocaulary Builder section at the back of the book that provides a word root list, gives tips on grouping words with similar meanings to learn a bunch of words more easily, and even the top words to know for the GRE. Overall, I think it's the best book out there!
Great Workbook and More November 5, 2006 Y. Chen (Austin,TX) 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
I just took my GRE yesterday and I can tell you that every word on the verbal portion (excluding the reading portion, of course) was in this book. The vocabulary building section was the most useful for me. I bought 3 sets of the flash cards - very useful, too. These 2 tools helped me get the verbal score I need to get in to the graduate school of my choice. Just beware that there are some errors in each one of them. Oh, a great companion to these two is the website dictionary.com. Study hard with these and you'll see great result.
